In 2008, Dr. Kallmayer commented on the potential consequences of stress induced by watching Olymipic games for watchers with cardiovascular risk factors:
Highly charged sports may provoke heart attacks, says top cardiologist
One of GermanyCs top cardiologists, today warned people to remain calm over the coming Olympic Games, due to the UAECs poor track record of heart attacks during highly-charged sports events in the past.
Dr Klaus Kallmayer, who heads up both German Heart Centre Bremen and the department of cardiology at City Hospital in Dubai Healthcare City, explained studies have shown cardiovascular incidents increase during sporting events as spectators get caught up in the moment.
In September 2007, Dr. Kallmayer was interviewed by Time Out Dubai for Hot Seat and gave his thought on medical challenges in the UAE:
Among the many records that the UAE is breaking, one achievement is not so enviable. The country now has the second highest prevalence of heart disease and diabetes per capita in the world – the pacific island of Nauru being the current leader. Time Out spoke to Dr Klaus Kallmayer, chairman of the German Heart Centre (GHC) in Dubai Healthcare City, to find out why the problem is so acute and what can be done to prevent it.
Dr. Kallmayer comments on stress factors in Dubai in a feature of Time Out Dubai:
‘I ran American Hospital’s emergency department for four years,’ confides Dr Randall Philipps, originally from Canada. ‘Every single shift, somebody would come in having a full-blown panic attack, thinking they were dying from a heart attack. I thought; “There has got to be something more we can do for these people besides giving them some Valium and sending them back out the door.”’
