As so often in life, the idea to create a German Heart Centre in the UAE came by chance. Its history begins in 2003, when Bremen Central Hospital sent a delegation to the Arab Health convention in Dubai in the usual hope to boost medical tourism to Bremen. As his group had just taken over the interventional services at Bremen Heart Centre, Dr. Kallmayer was asked to be a part of this delegation. He was impressed with the development of the country and the high quality of certain business sectors like hospitality and construction but less so with the medical infrastructure, which he had a chance to look into. Instead of sending the Emirati patients abroad he felt that a country with potential like the UAE could offer them the same quality at home.
He clearly saw that there was an opportunity for Bremen Heart Centre to play a positive role. Unlike most other medical institutions in Europe and the United States, his medical institution combined several decisive factors, which would allow to expand into the Gulf region: It was a tertiary care institution offering the whole scale of cardiology services; it could draw on the resources of a large medical service with ample staff; and it was privately owned so that business decisions could be made freely and unhampered by legal and bureaucratic obstacles. Where regular university hospitals had failed in the past, Bremen Heart Centre had the necessary tools.
Dr. Kallmayer and his associates, however, took their time to look more thoroughly into the market and business environment. By mid 2005 the decision was made to open a branch in the UAE and select Dubai as location, as Dubai Health Care City would offer them the most liberal and highest quality business environment.
The clinic was built between October 2005 and April 2006 according to plans and design made in Bremen but with local craftsmanship, products and selected imports coordinated by Dr. Kallmayer. The official opening of German Heart Centre Bremen was celebrated with a party and laser show on the terrace of the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club in April 2006, attended by the Consul General of Germany.
In 2007 German Heart Centre Bremen entered into partnership with the Welcare Group, in 2008 with The City Hospital at Dubai Healthcare City, where Dr. Kallmayer assisted in writing the guidelines, rules and regulations for cardiovascular medicine. The Mediclinic City Hospital remains to date a strategic partner, where the clinic provides its in-patient care and invasive procedures.
The combination of precision, state-of-the-art medical practice, efficient organization and unequivocal expert opinions convinced major partners to select German Heart Centre Bremen as preferred provider of cardiology care, one of the most discerning clients being Emirates Airline entrusting us with the care for thousands of pilots and other responsible, well-trained staff.
In summer 2010 German Heart Centre Bremen was transformed from a dependent branch into a Free Zone LLC incorporated within Dubai Healthcare City and directed by Dr. Klaus Kallmayer, who runs the clinic with his colleagues Dr. Caspar A. Boerner, Dr. Michael Lefkovits and Dr Beate W. Wild, supported by his Bremen based partners Dr. Reinhold Hachmoeller, dr. Christian Hegeler and Dr. Athanasios Gkanatsas and the colleagues of Bremen Heart Centre in Germany.
